The Dan River Region contains Pittsylvania County and the City of Danville and extends into North Carolina’s Caswell County.
The Dan River Region is one of the most health disparate regions in the commonwealth with high rates of unemployment coupled with low rates of educational attainment. It is estimated, that 17% of the population in the region lives on incomes below the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) and less than 14% have obtained a bachelor’s degree. Further, about one-quarter of the population is uninsured medically which complicates health concerns such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol which are all prevalent in the region. Additionally, three comprehensive needs assessments further identified obesity as a priority health issue for the region, as well as acknowledged concerns related to the capacity of community organizations to design and implement effective and sustainable solutions.
