Thanksgiving Family Feast
The nutrition subcommittee hosted the Partnership’s first-ever Thanksgiving Family Feast event Nov. 23, 2013. Three deserving families were invited to God’s Storehouse’s kitchen to learn how to prepare a healthy holiday meal that was low in fat, salt and sugar.
Family Feast was a fun and educational event that taught families that healthy options are tasty and affordable. Both parents and children chopped vegetables, grated cheese, and mixed batter to prepare the dishes for a wholesome meal. Families also learned how to plan healthy meals at home with the help of MyPlate and were taught how to determine appropriate portion sizes.

Community Health Fair
The Dan River Partnership for a Healthy Community co-hosted ‘ABCs to Health,’ a community-wide health fair April 6, 2013. In addition to DRPHC, Danville Parks and Recreation and Optima Health hosted and sponsored the event. Attendees were exposed to 30 different activities sponsored by 24 companies and organizations.
Vendors were from both the public and private sectors and they were able to advertised their products and services through informational displays. Some vendor tables contained games that taught participants proper nutritional choices, such as sorting sugar sweetened beverages and seeing visual representations of sugar and fat in certain foods. A card similar to a bingo card was given to attendees upon their arrival, and if participants got their card marked at the tables, they were eligible to receive a drawstring bag with the DRPHC logo and website on it.
National Night Out
Youth learned about flexibility, cardio and strength training exercises, and how often they should do these. Parents were offered free blood pressure assessments and body fat analysis.
Website Launch Event
The Dan River Partnership for a Healthy Community hosted its “Launch Event” March 20, 2010, to showcase its new website as well as the progress the partnership had made since beginning in April 2010.
As a way to raise awareness and further engage more community members in these regional obesity efforts, the DRPHC was awarded a ‘Make It Happen Grant’ by the Danville Regional Foundation to launch a website. The purpose of the website is to provide a centralized location to showcase the community’s efforts, promote networking and resource sharing, and raise awareness of local resources and activities to combat obesity. More than 70 community members, leaders and partners had the opportunity to mingle and view a presentation that summarized the history, partners, subcommittees and introduced the new website.
